First Fridays at Il Pirata

alt.musica comes to Il Pirata the first friday of each month from March through May, 2017. Upcoming dates include Friday, April 6 and Friday, May 4. Check out the fb event page for details. Il Pirata is located at 2007 16th St., SF 94103 We are asking $20 cover to see the band   The music we'll perform is from our chamber orchestra repertoire, which includes a few new pieces for April, 2018. We are helping celebrate Nat "King" Cole's 99th birthday, by reintroducing two songs, now with string parts: Beautiful Moons Ago and It Only Happens Once.

Windows (1994) A fast, syncopated song in minor tonality that is floating, surfing and gymnastic. Originally recorded in Boston with the Qwaynetet for an unreleased album as Latin Jazz. Now Salsified with added montunos. Stomping Ground (1996) An anthem written during my first visit to San Francicso. Cascades between Latin Jazz and Swing, now Salsified with added montunos. Sixteen K Is A Lot Of Kim (1999) A Second Line romp, as commentary on the ascii file length of an intimate, transatlantic email. Written while on tour in Prague with the funk band Raw Deluxe. A Musical Journey

A Musical Journey Songs should speak for themselves. Yet, I would like to speak to the journey on which these songs have themselves been. I picked this material because I'm fond of it. Yet, it never quite found a place in the repertoire of my working ensembles. Some of it has been around as long as I've been composing! A first attempt to revisit it during 2008-10 was imagined as a setting to feature my clarinet playing, and writing for voice. Carl and Alicia are alumni from that project, whose instrumentation was a similar format of woodwind trio, rhythm section and vocalist, including flute, clarinet and bassoon.
